Grantmaking

Joy of Giving Something does grantmaking in two primary categories: grants for emerging and professional artists, and educational grants for youth and young adults. Grants are made in partnership with museums, galleries, schools, and other not-for-profit organizations. JGS does not make grants directly to individual artists, and does not accept unsolicited requests.

JGS makes self-directed grants to small and medium-sized arts organizations that support emerging artists working in photography who are producing new and important work, and more established artists in need of special assistance or consideration. Multi-year grants support support programs that directly impact emerging and under-recognized artists working in photography.

Applications for funding are by invitation only. Unsolicited proposals will not be considered.

Joy of Giving Something Foundation (JGS) believes that every young person should have access to a high quality arts education. With a primary geographic focus on New York, we offer funding for visual literacy programs for middle and high school aged youth, as well as scholarships for students pursuing post-secondary degrees in photography and visual arts.

Working in partnership with educational institutions and community based organizations, JGS’ grant making is prioritized to deliver maximum impact and opportunities for young people in the most underserved communities.

Applications for funding are by invitation only.

Public Schools

JGS offers photography equipment grants to NYC Department of Education Schools through a partnership with The Fund for Public Schools. We also sponsor an in-school photography program serving students in grades 6, 7, and 8 at the Lower Manhattan Community Middle School, and have provided funding for visual arts and media programs through Arts Connection.

Afterschool Programs

In addition to supporting Beacon and Cornerstone afterschool programs, JGS provides equipment grants to organizations that serve young people in out of school time (OST). Some of our grantees have included Global Kids, Inc., Educational Video Center (EVC), Flower City Arts Center’s Studio 678, and Red Hook Initiative.

Community Based Organizations

Each year JGS offers grants to community based organizations that offer high-quality educational opportunities in photography and media arts. Recipients have included the Boys Club of New York, Anna Mirabai Lytton Foundation, Tayshana Chicken Murphy Foundation, and Josephine Herrick Project.

Scholarships

Since 2011 JGS has provided more than 200 scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary degrees in photography and media arts. Scholarship initiatives have been established at museums and learning centers such as Appalshop Media Institute, Harlem School of the Arts, Imagining America, ICP Teen Academy, PAL Project, and The Studio Museum in Harlem.

Please contact partner organizations for more information.
